Now, the Trump-appointed federal judge has been initially assigned to oversee the former president’s new federal criminal case in Miami, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. If she remains on the case, Cannon would have wide latitude to control timing and evidence in the case and be able to vet the Justice Department’s legal theory. Trump faces a total of 37 counts in special counsel Jack Smith’s probe into his alleged mishandling of classified documents, according to an indictment unsealed Friday – a stunning development that marks the first time a former president has faced indictment for federal crimes. Trump is expected to appear in Miami federal court Tuesday to be read the charges against him. That is expected to happen before Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, who signed the Mar-a-Lago search warrant in August. Among the charges Trump faces are 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information. In addition, the former president is charged with one count each of conspiracy to obstruct justice; withholding a document or record; corruptly concealing a document or record; concealing a document in a federal investigation; scheme to conceal; and false statements and representations. ABC News first reported the judicial assignments in the criminal case. Trump nominated Cannon to the bench in May 2020, and the Senate confirmed her by a vote of 56-21 just days after the presidential election. Cannon had largely stayed out of the national spotlight until she began handling the case the former president brought last year to challenge the Mar-a-Lago evidence collection. And nothing happens around town without them being well aware of it, even if that is a top-secret Ukrainian counteroffensive. “Our soldiers, it seems they all went for the counteroffensive,” Sokol says, longing for the day she can once again see her relatives, who are stuck inside Russian-occupied territories. “They are already starting to push [the Russians] away from us,” she says. “They will push them step by step, until they drive them out. CNN spoke to Ramakrishnan ahead of the Season 4 premiere about how it feels to be done with “Never Have I Ever,” what it was like to have Mindy Kaling as a first boss and what a show like this would have meant for her growing up. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Now that “Never Have I Ever” has come to an end, how does it feel for this to have been your first major acting role? That’s one thing I don’t think I’ll ever comprehend This was my first opportunity? This was my first job? I couldn’t ask for a better boss than Mindy Kaling. She has been there for me through thick and thin, and I love her to death – of course as someone who employs me, but also as someone who is there for me. I also lucked out with my cast members and my crew members. I got to grow with them through these four seasons. And then the role of Devi itself. I lucked out with a very amazing role that some people could just dream of. In a world where we barely get token representation, let alone authentic representation, I got to play a character that has the ability to have so many emotions and be so multifaceted. Right. Devi was refreshing not just because she was a South Asian American protagonist, but because she defied stereotypes of brown girls. She’s a young woman who is both smart but also bold and loud and goes through so many character arcs, has so many different relationships in her life. We get to see her be a fully formed human being. That as an actor, in general, is the dream Being able to play a character that you can sink your teeth into. Being able to play a brown girl as my first role is just the cherry on top. I’m spoiled. I’m so spoiled. Mindy Kaling screwed me over. She gave it to me too nice. Did you realize how rare that was when you first took on the role? In some ways, yes. In some ways, I didn’t. On one of Utkarsh’s Ambudkar, who plays Devi’s teacher Mr. Kulkarni first days on set, he said, “Oh my god, I’ve never been on a set with this many brown Then I realized this is my normal, but that hasn’t been the normal. In the ways that I did know this was rare is in being an audience member. The bar was really low and let’s be honest, it’s not that high still. What made “Never Have I Ever” so radical to you? Number one Therapy. That’s not even touched at the dinner table, let alone on TV. The fact that Nalini is down to get her daughter into therapy is amazing. Just touching on Season 1 topics, Devi is in therapy, Devi’s going through grief. Her mom Nalini is processing the loss of the love of her life as a single mom. Kamala is going through a whole story arc about her not being okay with arranged marriage. Devi is actively seeking sex. We rarely see a female character do that. And that’s just all Season 1. What would a show like “Never Have I Ever” have meant for you growing up? For so long, all the pretty girls onscreen were all the White girls. The female hero was always typically White. If they were of color, they were very rarely a South Asian girlie. I loved Harry Potter growing up. The Patil twins were obviously done so dirty. Their outfits? Awful. When Harry and Ron ditch the Patil twins at the Yule Ball, I was so sad. I don’t think I realize how much that impacted me as a kid. But when I saw Hermione walking down the stairs to the Yule Ball with her awesome pink dress, I wanted to have that moment. It doesn’t mean, of course, that South Asian women – women of color of all different backgrounds – aren’t just beautiful. It’s just that we’re not getting to see that in mainstream media. So in “Never Have I Ever,” it’s awesome to see the guys chase after the girl that looks like me or shares my face. It would have been a reminder that, “Hey, you’re attractive, kiddo. So don’t worry and don’t sweat the arm hair, the leg hair, the mustache. You’re Who was the first person you saw yourself in on TV? Personality-wise, I always related to Hermione Granger. Look-wise, It was kinda hard. The first Tamil person I knew on TV was Mindy Kaling in “The Mindy That was probably the first South Asian person I saw on TV. In general, though, growing up as a kid I related more to cartoons and animation. I had an easier time relating to a cartoon dog. I don’t think I need to say more. Do you have any parting words for fans of “Never Have I Ever?” Even though they might be sad that it’s over, I’m only hopeful that more shows like “Never Have I Ever” are coming soon. Shows are only getting better, and we’re gonna have more representation that’s even better than Devi. This is just the end of one chapter for audiences. New shows will come up, and better representation will come out. This will just be a fun show to look back on. But there was one thing Apple’s execs did not do during the keynote presentation wear the device. Even reporters who got early access to try on the device were asked by the company not to take pictures of the experience. The omission has not gone unnoticed. Some industry watchers have suggested that Apple CEO Tim Cook and others may have made a conscious choice to avoid seeing silly pictures of themselves with headsets turned into memes online. But behind this speculation is a more serious potential problem even Apple may struggle to make VR headsets look cool. Over the past decade, headsets have developed a reputation for being bulky and strange looking. Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus later acquired by Facebook, was widely mocked and memed in 2015 after being shown on a Time Magazine cover wearing a black headset with his legs bent, arms raised and head tilted up. He looked as though he would fly away at any moment. It’s not just headsets. Silicon Valley has struggled with the optics of other gadgets people wear on their face, too. An image of tech evangelist Robert Scoble wearing Google Glass in the shower had such a profound impact on the discourse around the product that then-Google CEO Larry Page once joked to him “Robert, I really didn’t appreciate the shower For Apple, the stakes are high to avoid similarly embarrassing visuals. The new headset, which blends both virtual reality and augmented reality, is Apple’s most ambitious – and riskiest – new hardware product in years. In keeping with its usual playbook, Apple is leaning on its design, hardware and marketing chops to convince people to spend thousands on the device. As many viewers were quick to point out during Monday’s event, the headset looks like a pair of designer ski goggles. In one early marketing image, a woman is shown wearing the headset while dressed in very chic clothing and lounging in an upscale living room. But not everyone is convinced. “They’re certainly not sleek. They are trying to be sleek, but it’s a big pair of goggles on your face,” Lisa Peyton, an extended reality and experiential marketing professor at the University of Oregon, told CNN. “I would not wear that thing around outside — nobody will. Investors are placing big bets on Alphabet, Meta META, Apple AAPL, Amazon AMZN, Nvidia NVDA, Tesla and others, hoping they can drive a new tech revolution with artificial intelligence. The returns from those five names this year are the largest we’ve seen in the past two decades, said Matt Bartolini, head of SPDR Americas research at State Street Global Advisors. This year, Nvidia’s stock is up 163%. Meta is up 120%. Tesla has surged 90%. And Apple, Amazon and Google are all up 40% or more. That’s because those companies are benefiting directly from the AI boom. “AI is a very big tent,” said Bartolini. It’s not just about search and ChatGPT, it encompasses everything from auto correct on Apple iPhones to the ads Amazon customers are served, he said. Those companies, which are six of the seven highest-valued companies in the S&P 500 Berkshire Hathaway, just ahead of Meta, is No. 6, make up 28% of the S&P’s total value. In other words, tech is driving the market. The S&P 500 rallied Thursday to end the day in a bull market, marking a 20% surge since its most recent low, reached on October 12, 2022. That brought an end to the bear market that began in January 2022, since a 20% lift from recent lows is generally accepted as the definition of the start of a bull market. However, there is no exact definition — and the current market situation is a bit more nuanced than the typical bull market-bear market binary. The very narrow market leadership by AI-adjacent tech stocks “is not a sign of a quality rally or bull market and this phenomenon leads to a market correction of some kind,” warned James Demmert, chief investment officer at Main Street Research. On the surface, Big Tech is seems to be “solving” the market’s problems, but cyclical and smaller companies are suffering below. “Real estate is down, materials are down, energy is down, financials are down,” said Bartolini. “This is not a cyclical recovery.” The S&P 500 is up about 12% so far this year, but the strength beneath the surface does not indicate that we will see similar gains over the next six months, he said. “Not all boats are rising with this tide.” Less than a quarter of the stocks in the S&P 500 are actually beating the index. “That’s a pretty low amount,” said Bartolini. Entering a bull market lifts investor sentiment, which could propel upward momentum in markets. Investors are certainly in a buying mood CNN’s Fear and Greed Index registered “Extreme Greed” Friday. “We don’t put a lot of stock pun intended in arbitrary definitions,” wrote analysts at Bank of America on Friday. But after crossing the 20% mark, the S&P 500 on average continued to rise over the next 12 months 92% of the time with a 19% average return, they noted. “The more likely direction of surprise is still positive,” they wrote.
